To wish for change will change nothing. To make the decision to take action right now will change everything. – Nick Vujicic
The month of October is my birth month. And as soon as we got into it, I started thinking of what I could do to make my life much better than it is now. I envisaged my next birthday in 2016 and I really want a lot of things to be different before then.
I have a lot of dreams that I desperately want to see become a reality. I imagined a life where all my past dreams had come to pass and I was dreaming and accomplishing new ones. That to me is a life without limits.
Maybe you are like me. Or maybe you are thinking, "Where do I start Toby? I have this big dream, but I don't know what I can do to see it come to pass."
Don't worry. I have compiled some steps for you to follow. These steps will guide you to living a life without limits
Here they are:
- Explore your options, self discovery is unending.
Ninety percent of the world’s woes come from people not knowing themselves, their abilities, their frailties and even their real virtues.” – Sydney Harris
The philosopher Plato is well known for the phrase, "Man know yourself".
Self discovery is an unending process. Many of us don't really know what we could be good at until we explore all our options.
Let me give you an instance with myself.
I once got elected as the organizing secretary of my student fellowship group. I had never been an organizer before, but I accepted the position, and did my best.
Along the line, I noticed that I loved organizing things. Planning programs became a hobby for me.
Right now, event planning and management is one of the businesses I do. Had I not chosen to explore that option, I wouldn't have discovered that I had a strong knack for managing events.
You should do the same thing. Don't just be satisfied with the things you feel you can do very well presently. Believe it or not, your abilities are so much more than you can imagine. Explore them.
- Discover your areas of strengths.
It is only well with me when I have a chisel in my hand- Michelangelo
There is no gift-less human being. We all have strong points, and things we are very good at doing. These are things we often refer to as gifts or potentials.
I have heard and seen many people get confused about the subject of purpose. These people are waiting for a cosmic light to appear in the sky and announce the glorious purpose for which they were born.
They forget that they already have gifts and talents embedded inside them. They do not realize that these gifts are the major pointers to what purpose they are supposed to fulfil on earth.
You should not be like them. Do a quick exercise now. Take a pen and get a writing material ready.
Now make a list of the things you know you are naturally gifted at. Write down those things you have done exceptionally well in the past, or things you have once received accolades for doing.
Those are your strengths. Keep them handy, they are the pointers you need to start living your best life.
- Seize the opportunities to use your gifts.
Too many people overvalue what they are not, and undervalue what they are. – Malcolm Forbes
Just as we all have gifts; life always gives us the opportunities to use our gifts. Unfortunately, many of us shy away from these opportunities. We tell ourselves so many lies and accept the ones that other people tell us.
For instance someone recently asked me to be his stage manager during one of his music concerts. Initially I didn't want to. I felt overwhelmed by the responsibility.
I totally forgot that I had just successfully planned and organized a national convention just before then. I forgot that event planning and management was one of my strong points. I was worried that I could flop and mess things up.
I was over thinking things and giving credence to the things I should ignore. Fortunately, my friend persisted, and at the end I did an awesome job. But I would have lost out on that opportunity if I did not seize it when it came.
It is not enough to identify your strengths and potentials. You equally need to maximize the different opportunities that life offers you to make use of these gifts.
- Never judge yourself by your weaknesses.
We all have our weaknesses, we are not angels. There is no human that is entirely perfect. Identify these weaknesses, but use your strengths to make up for them.
For example, I never liked Algebra while I was in school. I struggled with it and barely managed to be average. If I was judged by Algebra alone, I would have been a terrible student.
However I was exceptionally good in the humanities, literature and grammar. It is not surprising that though I studied Chemical Engineering, I make my living today as a freelance writer.
- Embrace your fears.
Trust your own instincts. Your mistakes may as well be your own, instead of someone else’s. – Billy Walder
Are you afraid of failure? Are you scared of not being good enough? Does the possibility of making mistakes make you fear?
I understand how you feel. I used to be a victim of fear myself. I used to be so afraid of not accomplishing my set goals that I ended up not taking any step at all.
It wasn’t until I started working as an insurance salesman that I learnt how to conquer my major fear-the fear of rejection. In fact, I learnt to embrace it. And when I did, I started making sales easily and more rapidly.
You can do the same thing. Instead of running away from the things you are afraid of, run towards them, and watch them disappear
- Act on the belief that you can be the best
Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first. – Mark Twain
One of the best sayings I ever heard is that "Life is not fair. You may not get what you deserve, but you will easily get the things you demand for." It is just like a restaurant; you can only get what you order for.
Many times, placing these ‘orders’ require that you take risks. That is why you need a lot of faith. Nobody will believe you more than you believe yourself. Sometimes you may have to stand alone. Some other times you may have a lot of people discourage you. But you need to believe in yourself against all odds.
That belief is what will enable you to take the necessary risk to live a life without limits.
Taking action is a risk because you may not succeed. Your chances of succeeding when you act on your beliefs is not 100%. But your chance of not succeeding when you do nothing is guaranteed.
Take that risk. You have a song you want to write? Compose it. Go to the studio and work all through the night if you have to.
What about that book? It’s high time you started writing it. The same applies for all the other dreams you have, act on them today. You can still fulfil your dreams. It may look far-fetched, but a little step taken today is better than the big step you are still planning on taking tomorrow.
Someone once said that the average person dies at 25 and is buried at 75. Refuse to be average; you can live a life without limits, and you can start living it today.
