Waking up is the hardest task of the day. The thought of work, school, or chores, sucks out all your energy. You’re already exhausted just by the thought of it. The idea of procrastinating is likely, and when at home, that’s a formula for those days-when-nothings-gets-done.
Fortunately, procrastinating is not a disease. It’s merely a bad habit that can be changed, well, with a good one. To help you start, here are five simple hacks to be productive at home.
1. Remove your office from your bedroom.
Your bedroom is your private sanctuary. It is the place where you rest, rejuvenate, and dream. Don’t ruin that comfy vibe by making it your office. You’re taking the stressful energy in your bedroom creating a mindset of work and deadlines instead of peace and comfort.
Be it a school paper, an office presentation, or a scrapbook, take it outside of your room. Besides, how can you finish anything when your toasty bed is just three steps away?
Thinking of best spots in your home to work? Continue reading the next hack.
2. Work beside a window.
There have been studies that suggest the wonderful benefits of sunlight (bright lights in general) on our sleep, mood, and productivity. Exposure to sunlight can boost your alertness as well as improving your sleeping patterns by helping regulate your body clock. It also makes you happier as sunlight is linked to the release of a hormone called serotonin, which is known as a happy hormone.
And while you’re scanning your house for that perfect window… you should consider a spot for the next tip.
3. Get a plant.
Get yourself a houseplant not just for the sight of foliage, but for the many benefits of having one. A plant can literally improve your quality of life. It gives you more oxygen and purifies the air. There are studies that linked the presence of plants to decreased fatigue, occurrence of cough, colds, and other flu-like symptoms. You can get all those benefits by simply adding a bit of greenery in your house.
Now that you’re thinking of adding some greens in your house, why not take it to the next level?
4. Redecorate your home.
To be specific, redecorate your home often. You know that feeling after you organize your drawers or desks? The sight of neatly stacked folders? How about the smell of fresh linen? Redecorating your home motivates you to maintain that new look.
Redecorating doesn’t have to be expensive. There are a lot of great DIY ideas on the internet, or you could just simply move some furniture around, like say, moving your desk near a window?
It is difficult to change the things you got used to, and the next hack could be a shocker.
5. Get the TV out of your bedroom.
As easy as it sounds, it’s not at all. Watching television, most of the time, is what you do before you sleep and when you wake up — two of the things you do everyday that matter the most. By removing your TV from your bedroom, you could get more quality sleep for a better and more productive day.
Also, without the morning chatter, you could get prepared for school or work faster. And since you’re not using the TV, you get less electricity, less energy used, less monthly bill!
Bonus hacks
- Exercise in the morning. Like bright lights, exercising stimulates the release of another happy hormone called endorphin.
- Use blue and red more often. Studies show, blue boosts creativity and red increases attention to details.
- Create a checklist for… everything! Checklists make you organized, and striking off a task give you that feeling of fulfillment you can use as a drive for the next task.
