My Morning Routine for Health, Happiness, and Productivity

My Morning Routine for Health, Happiness, and Productivity

morning-routine-cover

I admit I've never been much of a morning person. Looking back on my K-12 years, I have no idea how my mom managed to get me out of bed every day.

When I made it to college, my true self began to flourish. Take a look for yourself:

college-morning-routineFast forward several years to today and my desire to sleep in most days still reigns supreme. However, in my never-ending quest for success, I realized something was going to have to change.

Since every other post on the internet (much like this one) lauds morning routines as a critical factor in predicting the rest of your day, I decided that was going to be my 80/20 focus. Rather than try to completely overhaul my habit of sleeping in, I embraced it and chose to tweak what I did within the hour after waking up.

Crafting my routine

First, I looked at what was most important to me. My guiding values in life lead off with health, playfulness, and growth. These I had defined a few years back while going through some medical issues, realizing my sarcasm and will to mess with people was never going to go away, and the depression I sank into if I wasn't making progress in life. Ergo: health, playfulness, and growth.

With my values understood, onto crafting a routine that supported them. It was a strategic effort, to say the least, to incorporate specific habits that aligned with those guiding values. I didn't come up with a masterpiece all at once - not by any means. I focused on adding one habit at a time. Tried some things here and there, experimented, found what worked for me, and then shifted my energy on fitting the next habit in.

As a result, I now have a core morning routine that I go through every day. I still sleep in on most days, but after waking up I get right to it. The routine was beautifully crafted so that regardless of my waking time, it still sets me up for a day focused on health, playfulness, and growth.

Now as with most things in life, I don't have the time or willpower to do a full hour long routine every freaking morning. Instead, I keep a core routine that takes no more than 10-15 minutes. It's perfect for me.

Also, if there's something else I need for any particularly day, I can make a few simple adjustments, without changing the core, to prepare for whatever else is coming my way.

Without any further ado, I present to you my morning routine.

  1. I fill up a giant glass of water, add in some Athletic Greens, and chug it first thing after waking up. Guiding value: health.

This has been one of the absolute best things I've ever done for my health. Let me start by saying that I love fruits and vegetables. My problem is I'm often too lazy to cut and prepare them on a consistent basis. If I don't eat out and order some veggies, chances are they got left out that day. Drinking this greens drink every morning does two main things for me:

  1. It cures my partial morning anxiety from waking up slightly dehydrated

  2. It's my vegetable insurance policy for the day

As a bonus, it's also the reason I haven't had a full blown cold in over a year and a half. Any time I feel something coming on, I double the dosage for a few days and it thwarts off the disease.

  1. I practice gratitude by writing in a gratitude journal. Guiding value: playfulness.

Practicing gratitude helps me focus on the positive and appreciate the things I already have in life. This boosts happiness, which fuels the playful mood I try to maintain throughout my days. Easy peasy.

  1. Immediately after practicing gratitude, I write down my three Mission Critical Tasks (MCTs). Guiding value: growth.

Because gratitude helps me focus on the positive, by definition, that means I'm not stuck dwelling on the negative. Positive thoughts make me feel incredibly motivated, almost like anything is possible. I'm sure you've experienced this too at some point. This surge of positivity is what drives my productivity to get things done and continue my growth as a human. The only thing I have to be careful of is making sure I'm not too ambitious with my tasks for the day.

  1. Practice mindfulness by either meditating for a few minutes, or doing some deep breathing. Guiding values: health and growth.

The key here is just doing something to focus on the self for a few minutes. My only goal is to clear some headspace by noticing my thoughts instead of being consumed by them. I practice this with hopes of someday being able to levitate like the Buddhist monks. OK, maybe not, but this is the icing on the cake before I go out and tackle the day.

So there you have it - my morning routine that I've come to love oh so much. What's yours look like?

The Great Time Management Hoax: Why Saving Time Is Bad For Your Business

The Great Time Management Hoax: Why Saving Time Is Bad For Your Business

time management tips

You are frustrated.

Because you have read a lot of blog posts about time management...

but you can`t see any progress in your business.

You can try to neglect the fact as long as you want, but sooner or later you have to realize that...

...you have just wasted a lot of time trying to learn how to save time. How ironic is that?

Your fruitless attempts to hack time have just set you back even more. And there is no way you can catch up with your schedule.

What`s even worse, is that you feel stupid and you start to doubt yourself.

You want dig a whole in the ground with a shovel, and then hide there for the next decade.

Can you relate? If so, no worries. We`ve all been there.

Relax, I got your back. No need to use that shovel. Let me introduce you to the great time management hoax: why saving time is bad for your business.

Let`s start by looking into...

Why your focus is wrong

You are focusing on saving time in your business, right?

But that is not the real goal. Let`s dig deeper.

Because you don`t really want to save time in your business. You want to save time in your business so you can achieve something else.

The question is: what is it that you actually want to achieve?

Most likely it would be to spend more time with your family or increase the income in your business.

So it basically boils down to you achieving more time vs. more money.

You might be thinking: "Tor, what if I actually want to do both?"

A good question, indeed.

You should only focus on one big goal at a time.

Imagine a person who is dreaming of winning a bodybuilding contest. In order to win the contest he / she needs to have built muscles and lost a lot of weight. However in order to do that efficiently, the bodybuilder can`t focus on both goals at the same time. First he / she focuses on building muscles, and once that goal has been achieved, then the focus is changed to losing weight.

Let me share a secret with you.

Are you ready?

Once you achieve one of your goals, you are actually able to easily achieve your second goal too.

If you had to only focus on one of the goals (time or money), which one would you choose first?

If you said more money, then a high five to you. *SLAP*

Once you increase your income, you can afford to hire people. This will result in you getting more time to spend with your family.

The true power of leverage

The rules are the same. We only have 24 hours in our day and it should be a level playing field.

But it`s NOT.

Why?

Because some people are using the true power of leverage.

Do you know the main difference between a very successful person and you?

It`s how you have spent your 24 hours, every single day.

Let me use an example:

James and Peter both have the same skillset, business model, products / services and target market. They have both been hustling like crazy for 3 years. They both earn about $50 000 per year and work for 50 hours per week in their business. In other words; they should have an equal chance to succeed.

Now they decide to choose a different approach. A choice that will change their life forever (yeah, that sentence could have been taken from a fairy tale, I know).

James?s approach is to focus on saving time in his business so he can spend more time with his family.

James?s measureable goal: to shave off 10 hours per week, while being able to maintain the same yearly income for his business.

It will look like this:

Year 1: 45 hours per week - income $50 000

Year 2: 40 hours per week - income $50 000 (Goal reached)

Year 3: 40 hours per week - income $50 000 (Procrastinating)

Year 4: 40 hours per week - income $50 000 (Procrastinating)

Year 5: 40 hours per week - income $50 000 (Procrastinating)

Peter?s approach is to focus on becoming more productive so he can earn more money in his business, and then hire help to get more time with his family.

Peter?s measureable goal one: become more productive and focus on earning more money in his business.

Peter?s measureable goal two: when he earn $20 000 more per year, he will hire help and reduce his own workload to 40 hours per week, being able to spend more time with his family, while his income will be increasing.

It will look like this:

Year 1: 50 hours per week - income $60 000 (Goal one reached)

Year 2: 50 hours per week - income $70 000 (Goal one reached)

Year 3: 40 hours per week - income $80 000 (Goal one and two reached)

Year 3: 40 hours per week - income $90 000 (Growing)

Year 5: 40 hours per week - income $100 000 (Growing)

The only difference between James and Peter is how they use the power of leverage.

When it comes to business, the power of leverage is spending your time in best way possible in order to grow your business (long-term).

Note: Building a successful business is a lot of hard and strategic work. James and Peter are just examples, but it illustrates the point of how the power of leverage works.

The business world is like football. Saving time in your business is being on the defense, and becoming more productive so you can earn more money is being on the offense.

When you get the ball, you should charge toward your opponent`s end of the field for a touchdown. It`s impossible to win a match if you never move forward on the field.

What to do next...

Now you understand the importance of productivity in your business, instead of just saving time.

However, this information is totally useless if you don`t apply it.

Want to earn more money in your business?

Focus on increasing you productivity!

What is your experience with increasing productivity in your business?

How did it impact the income in your business?

The Truth On How To Become Self Confident

The Truth On How To Become Self Confident

how to be more confident

"Cultivating a close, warm-hearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the ultimate source of success in life". ~ Dalai Lama

If you want to know how to become self confident on a more permanent basis, I'd like you to set aside your current notions on how confidence is cultivated and give me 5 minutes to put forward my case.

You see, I actually believe that confidence arises naturally and automatically once something else is taken care of.

I also believe that the usual advice on acquiring confidence is ineffective, temporary at best, and maybe even harmful in the long run.

What I believe to be the true method for developing self-confidence may be so counter-intuitive that it shocks you.

Standard advice is along the lines of the "ra-ra" pump-up. You tell yourself that you are good enough. Maybe you even make a "what's great about me" list. Fix your posture. Do a Superman pose (yes that is real advice given by some people). But how long will it last? If you've tried it, you'll know the answer to that one.

So why is it temporary? Why does none of it really work?

Can you see what's actually happening here? You're merely 'masking' a problem, not actually dealing with the root cause.

I believe it's like attempting to combat an inferiority complex by developing a notion of superiority. However, in my opinion, a superiority complex and an inferiority complex are two sides of the same coin.

A superiority complex is just another form of inferiority. Why?

Because the only people who desire to be better than everyone else are those who feel inferior. The need to "outshine" everyone is actually born of fear and weakness, not strength.

So therefore:

  • Fear

  • Insecurity

  • Inferiority

...masks itself as:

  • Arrogance

  • Overcompensation

  • Superiority

The temporary pump-up method is based on a totally erroneous understanding of what true confidence really is.

Your job is not to overcome low self-confidence, but to allow it to disappear as if it never existed.

How?

Ok, I've kept you in suspense long enough. What we need to find is the antidote to fear, insecurity, inferiority and so on.

And I think it can be summed up in one word...

Goodwill.

If you can fill yourself with a sense of goodwill for everyone, can you possibly be fearful? Can you feel inferior when your mind is at ease like this?

The Dalai Lama, a man I have immense respect for, calls it "warm-heartedness". Can you feel insecure with a warm heart? I don't think it's possible.

Here is another quote from His Holiness:

"I try to treat whoever I meet as an old friend. This gives me a genuine feeling of happiness."

With a friendly and genuine interest in others, you can't help but be confident. And the strangest thing is, you are doing it without giving a single thought to how confident you are. Like I said at the top of the article, it arises naturally and automatically.

When you live with a warm heart, your focus and interest is on other people. In any given situation then you naturally come across as secure and confident, without any actual conscious effort on your part.

So fear and insecurity are removed with this new mindset - it's gone. But was it "conquered"? Was insecurity battled and fought? No. These states of mind simply cease to exist in a mind that is friendly and at ease. There was no battle; confidence arises as a natural by-product.

It's like happiness itself: The more you pursue it directly, the more it eludes you. Happiness comes indirectly while you're doing other things.

So my belief and my message is this: Traditional methods of improving confidence tend to be egoistic and self-centered. I'm convinced that this can only bring temporary change at best...and it may even make things worse.

In contrast, the more your thoughts and actions are motivated by a sense of goodwill, the freer and more confident you will become.

So it turns out that you don't need to be Superman, you just need a warm heart.

And it's just a lot easier :)

How Bioenergetic Movements Can Improve Your Life (In Just 5 mins a Day)

How Bioenergetic Movements Can Improve Your Life (In Just 5 mins a Day)

bioenergenics

This morning I leapt out of bed and started stomping up and down with my hands in the air shouting HUH HUH HUH HUH...

Yes my housemates think I'm crazy, but they haven't heard of bioenergetics.

Not many people have. When looking to uncover and overcome problems of the mind, we've naturally always turned to the mind for the solution--just look at psychotherapy.

The reality is though, the body influences the mind just as much as the mind influences the body.

Today's scientists are realizing the 'mind-body correlation' is a much closer relationship than previously thought. Heart rate, blood pressure, muscular tension, body position, facial expressions; the physical state and actions of the body are being shown to have a direct impact on how we think, feel, and even behave.

So if psychotherapy treats problems in the mind through exploration of the mind, and physiotherapy treats problems in the muscles through manipulation of the body, psychosomatic therapies such as Alexander Lowens' 'bioenergetics' treats the mind through exploration and manipulation of the body. In bioenergetics, neurotic holding patterns, such as anxieties, fears, and repressed feelings are explored and released through active expression in the body.

These expressions consist of certain breathing, moving, and body-centering techniques which loosen hidden muscular tension, disrupt repetitive movement patterns, and relieve accumulated stress in the body.

The emotional and physical benefits are endless. According to Alexander Lowen--founder of bioenergetics therapy--some of those benefits include reducing stress, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and chronic muscular tension, and enhancing sexuality, emotional expression, and feelings of happiness.

So whatever it is you are looking to achieve, let's take a look at some of the ways in which you can incorporate bioenergetic therapy into your life in as little as 5 minutes a day (thanks to Elliot Hulse, you can find a video to accompany all the exercises mentioned here).

Get More in Tune With Your Feelings

We live in a thinking culture that believes all problems can be solved through thinking your way through them. This is troublesome, especially as we know willpower and self-discipline are limited resources which deplete significantly over the course of a day--depending on the impact of factors such as conflict, decisions, and distractions.

When our minds grow weary, we 'think' we've used up all our energy. We rarely stop to consider the affect our body is having on our ability to maintain control of our minds.

Tough decisions, stressful clients, exchanges with colleagues or family members; situations like these are relatively fleeting in the mind but manifest long term in the body. Thus by the end of the day it feels like our bodies have been dragged with our mind through the turmoil. We feel physically drained even though we've been sitting down all day in a comfortable office.

Keep in tune with how you hold tension of the day and block energy in your body with the Shake & Vibrate. Try it out in the morning or at intervals throughout the day (if you can find a bit of privacy):

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and arms down by your side.

  2. Begin to vibrate and shake different parts of the body, exploring different and unusual movement patterns--the wilder the better.

  3. Make sure to breathe deeply to help circulate oxygen and loosen up those tense muscles.

Ground Yourself in The Present

Muscular tension and stress in the body is a gradual build up of energy from past events and experiences. Just like getting rid of mental baggage, once you begin to free your body of the weight it carries from the past, you can begin to embrace more acute feelings that arise in the present.

You could try and do this through conversation, but it would only have limited success. For words are just thoughts, and thoughts do not invoke the same affects as physical movements on the body. They may help you learn to recognize tension of the shoulders or stomach, but through movements like The Warrior Pound (or Ground Pound), you can do just that, and much, much more:

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and arms up in the air.

  2. With both feet flat on the ground, start doing small jumps and chant the word 'HUH'

  3. Each time you hit the ground, push the sound from deep in your pelvic floor. Your whole body should vibrate. Continue for several minutes or until the neighbors come knocking.

Get out of your head and more connected to your body by grounding yourself firmly in the present moment. Soon you'll be a stranger to the common feeling of being afraid to come alive and fully embrace your true self.

Bursting With Energy

Ever seen a movie where there's a psychiatrist sitting back in a big arm chair while a patient aggressively sobs about their issues, just moments later to be adorning a radiating smile? Well, turns out this happens with the body too.

In today's rapidly paced world, stored tension and trapped energy in the body has little opportunity to be released. We sleep, drive our cars, type at our desks, sit in cafes, and repeat. This repetitive behaviour and the repetitive movements that make up the behaviour--walking, sitting, typing, eating--foster imbalances in the way we use and free energy in the body.

That not only means we develop poor posture, but we begin to forget how our bodies can move and feel outside this limited range, quickly leading to lethargy, fatigue, and an overall reduction in energy levels.

Break up repetitive movement patterns and flood the body with oxygen with The Bow:

  1. Bend your knees slightly and lean back, pushing your fists into the notches just above your bum in the lower back.

  2. Relax the muscles in your back and chest, look ahead, open your mouth wide, and take deep breaths through the nose, expanding the diaphragm fully and releasing the breath forcefully.

  3. Don't worry if you start vibrating, thats your body trying to break up muscular tension. Continue for several minutes.

Bioenergetics isn't just about solving problems, it's about learning to live a life of greater quality. The practice may seem a little crazy at first, but in reality our bodies are built for incredible things, not just watching cat videos and flicking through Facebook--now that is crazy. Now's the time to give bioenergetics a go and get more in tune with not what you think you want, but what your body wants!

3 Thoughts that Sabotage Your Success and How to Change Them

3 Thoughts that Sabotage Your Success and How to Change Them

14602770711_63711dae35_z

Every single one of us is capable of greatness. So what is it about the human psyche that insists on casting a continuous shadow of self-doubt over our dreams? Why do we seem to sabotage our own success by taking actions that deliberately conflict with what we know we truly want? The answer certainly isn't simple, but if we trace these thoughts all the way to their root cause, we usually find a great deal of fear and a poor sense of self-worth.

Sounds bleak, doesn't it? But rest assured that fear can be managed, and better self-worth can be cultivated through a few simple changes in our thought patterns. Listed below are a few common, self-defeating thoughts, and how to transform them into more helpful, positive affirmations.

1. "I'm not good enough, so I shouldn't bother trying."- Of course you're not good enough--yet. True greatness takes lots of practice, and that is one of the toughest things I have had to learn as a writer. It's painful and discouraging to see how much improvement we need in order to reach the level of brilliance we see in others we admire.

I find myself avoiding writing sometimes just because I don't want to see the awkward sentences that come before I refine my work. I cringe a bit when I read some of my first blog posts, but when I read my more recent work I can see that those beginning writings were part of the evolution that was necessary for me to grow my talent.

So this statement becomes: "I must try, so I can become better."

2. "It's too late for me to follow my dream"- It's easy to think our "window" of opportunity has passed, and could be gone forever. I look back at the 4.5 years I spent in college and think about how much freedom and opportunity I had to develop my talent. Now I am 31, with 2 young kids and very little time to work on my dream.

But guess what I didn't have while I was in college? The insight to know what I am truly meant to do with my life, and the maturity to know that it will take lots of hard work. After years of thinking success should come easy or that I will someday just be "discovered," I finally have the wisdom I need, and a clear, realistic path to reaching my goals. I may only have a couple hours a day to work at it, but at least I know where I am going now. It doesn't matter if you are 31 or 101, it's never too late to start something. The time we spend dwelling on wasted time could be spent moving towards our goals.

So this statement becomes: "It's time to move forward now."

3. "I don't deserve happiness and success"- Here's a funny little fact about true happiness: Most people are actually afraid of it. Maybe it's because we are scared that too much success or happiness means some impending doom is inevitable. We think that at some point, we're bound to lose everything. Maybe suffering is a safer place for some people, because it means they can't be let down since they are already down. When we are up--happy and successful, down seems much scarier and more hurtful.

The thing is, you are going to have ups and downs. But as you work harder you will have more frequent and bigger ups, and you will learn how to handle your downs better. It helps to remember that many successful people before you have come back from some pretty massive downs.

So this statement becomes: "I am worthy of happiness and success."

Everyone must start from the bottom, and the top can seem impossibly far when you let fear and self-doubt drive your thoughts and actions. When you learn to recognize self-defeating thoughts for the unproductive lies they really are, your self-worth can have room to grow and flourish. There will always be a small voice inside you that whispers,

"You aren't good enough."

Know that you have the inner strength to ignore that self-sabotaging voice, and move forward.

How to Be Happy Even If You Don't Have Money

How To Be Happy Even If You Don't Have Money

how to find happiness

Nowadays, it's commonplace that "money makes the world go round". It almost implies that one cannot be happy if one is not quite well off. Is this true, actually? Let's look at what psychologists and self-help gurus say about that.

As it happens, leading a happy life even if you have to pinch pennies is more than realistic. If you wonder how, here is some advice for you to follow:

- Don't compare your financial possibilities with those of other people - at least, of your friends and relatives (you don't want to feel unhappy in the family circle and among friends, do you?). Such comparisons are a thankless job because there will always be somebody who has more money than you. And if your self-esteem is largely based on how much dough you have, then you are doomed to self-contempt;

- Close relationships and socializing with people you like can give you a lot more happiness than being aware of the fact that you have a tidy sum on your bank account. Humans are creatures for whom it is vitally important to love and to be loved - so just this feeling, Her Majesty Love, is capable of significantly raising the level of life satisfaction. If you are alone, find yourself somebody to love. If you aren't, make sure your relationships with those who are close to you are warm and supportive;

- Those who want to enjoy life should avoid engaging in self-reflection. Don't self-analyze too much - instead, just LIVE, thinking about simple positive things. Reasoning about happiness can't replace actual happiness;

- Choose a job that gives you pleasure and promotes your self-realization. In addition, it is expedient that this job doesn't involve overworking - exhaustion and happiness are hardly compatible with each other;

- A good rest is very important. Get enough sleep, take outdoor walks, spend time in nature. In this way, you will always be in a good mood. Don't forget to exercise, because active recreation is the best one (but don't overtax yourself, either);

- Aspire to something realistic, set only attainable goals. If you associate happiness with having billions of dollars or ruling the world, you will stay unhappy forever. Life can give you many affordable yet pleasurable things, so don't overlook or underestimate them;

- Imagine that you have no money at all. What could you take pleasure in under the circumstances? Think about it and you will surely invent some ways to have fun completely free of charge;

- Become a volunteer. By doing so, you, first, will see lots of people who are REALLY unhappy; in comparison with them, you are most likely happy as a clam. Second, helping those people may bring you no less satisfaction than if you threw your money about. Because that's the way we are - when we help others, when we make them happy, we feel happy, too;

- Infinite happiness as well as peace of mind, inspiration, and a lot of other great things including reason to live can be brought by religion. That's why if you are not a religious person, you might consider becoming one. And if you are, then remember that the Bible says: "Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income... Happy are the people whose God is the Lord. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart";

- If you feel unhappy, you can turn to self-help methods, techniques, and tools, many of which are either free or cheap. They will help you get rid of anxiety, phobias, depression; become more confident, more sociable; less sad, less bored, etc. And it is very likely that, having solved your mental and emotional problems, you will start feeling happy - at least, much happier than you were before.

Bear in mind that happiness isn't something that has to be bought for money - it's just a state of mind. It absolutely depends on your attitude toward life, and it's up to you to change this attitude if necessary.

Introducing Short Notes: An App for Quickly Capturing Your Ideas

I love taking notes. In fact, I believe that the habit has been essential for my personal growth. But can you guess what my main note-taking app is? Evernote? OneNote?

Well, I do use OneNote, but my main note-taking app - the one that I use the most - is Short Notes.

Image of Short Notes on iPhone. Click 'Display images below' to see it.

Short Notes is an iOS app that I develop myself. I was looking for a note-taking app that fits my needs, but I couldn't find one, so I decided to develop Short Notes.

I developed it back in 2011 and have used it since then. But I have never written about it here. Why? Because I didn't think that the app was good enough. Recently though, I released a new version that makes me feel good to share it with you.

As its name implies, Short Notes helps you take short notes. Let's say you take a walk in the park and an idea comes to your mind in the form of one or a few sentences. Short Notes is ideal for this kind of situation. You can quickly capture and organize that idea.

With Short Notes:

  • You don't need to give a title to a note. You just write down the sentences that come into your mind.

  • You can see all your ideas in one continuous stream. You don't need to tap on a note's title first to view its content. The entire content of multiple notes is right there in the stream. It's just like reading a Twitter timeline.

  • You can give multiple tags to a note, and you can read notes by tag. This way you can easily see all your ideas on a subject.

  • You can mark some notes as favorites. This allows you to see your most important ideas in one place.

To encourage you to be concise, the maximum length of a note is 250 characters. Short Notes is like your personal Twitter, but with the ability to easily organize your ideas.

The app has been essential for my personal growth, and I'm happy to share it with you today. I hope you find it useful too.
